australia – the movie not the continent

Although the continent is pretty awesome IMHO! But then I have to say that being Aussie and all. And the movie does show the continent as being pretty awesome. All sweeping plains and craggy cliffs, stampeding cattle, kangaroos and gum trees and red dust everywhere. I think Nicole Kidman was the only tidy looking person in the whole film. Everyone else looked like they hadn’t bathed in a couple of weeks and spent that time rolling around in the dirt. I guess it is Darwin though. Whoops. Mean.

But I liked it. Though this may not being the popular opinion what with people saying it’s over the top and melodramatic with bad acting, a silly story and, according to someone who shall remain nameless, Hugh Jackman being a prawn (sacrilege!). But I thought it was enjoyable movie because of most of these things. It’s supposed to be all epic in the style of Gone with the Wind etc. And so it had to be melodramatic and a bit fantastical. I mean really a small boy stopping a giant herd of stampeding cattle just by singing at them? It’s fantasy! I did love the boat coming out of the fog to the tune of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’. Oh happy endings.

All in all I enjoyed it. Go see it if only for the gorgeousness of the Aussie Outback – which to be honest I’ve never seen as I’ve never been there. It’s on my to-do list for when I get home.

And for those who don’t know: Prawn is slang apparently meaning Bad head, Good body. It’s also what we throw on the barbie. Not bloody shrimps.

I got halfway through SuperSize Me last night and realised that I would never eat another McDonalds hamburger ever again. Not a big loss really as I haven't had one in years. But just watching that silly, silly man as he gorged himself on fast food filth was making me feel ill. But also inspired. Today I, the average office worker who drives to and from work each day and sits at a computer, walked 4731 steps between 7am and 7pm. A far cry from my personal best of over 15,000 one busy Saturday when I had french class, shopping in the city and then a candy bar shift at work.

white noise

Went and saw "White Noise" tonight and for the first time in a very long time I was absolutely bored to tears. Now normally I'm a pretty easy to please girl. I'll sit through pretty much anything and the worst you'll hear out of me is "well that was alright". But this movie gets 4 clocks! That is the number of times that I looked at my watch during the movie. And the only reason that it wasn't more is that I spent about a quarter of it half asleep.  Good thing I get into the movies for free or might really be annoyed.

Saw Hellboy the other day. Good movie. But am now somewhat disturbed as found him very manly and kinda sexy. I'm a sick, sick girl.

best movie ever

Saw Harry Potter 3 last night. Best Movie Ever. Well maybe not but pretty damn good. Very different from the first two but in a good way. Don't know what those critics were talking about that there wasn't much humour. There were much more funny bits than the previous two I thought. Hermione punching Malfoy in the nose, pretty much anything that Ron says, the grabby hunchback at the Leaky Cauldron in the beginning. But then how can any movie with Jamaican talking shrunken heads not be cool? I wonder where I can get one of those?

how to know you live in Melbourne

Another genuine Melbourne Autumn day. Wind, grey skies and the constant threat of rain. Unlike yesterday with the wind, grey skies and constant pouring rain. And very unlike last week with the freakishly bright, hot, sunny days. Ended up spending the day at the movies seeing the facinating "Endless Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Not normally my kind of film but riveting all the same. Though I find the whole notion of erasing painful memories to be a fundamentally bad idea. It's our memories that make us who we are, that shape our personalities and that influence our actions. And you know what they say. I believe that it goes something like those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Now that would be painful.

Another new Harry Potter trailer and with only four months to go my excitement is building. Unfortunately that means that this Christmas promises to be somewhat lacking in terms of blockbuster movies. The first year without a Lord of the Rings or a Harry Potter. How sad.

Saw Return of the King for the second time yesterday and possibly liked it more that the first time I saw it in France (on the 17th of December!). It didn't even seem as long. Though it probably seemed like it went forever in Paris due to the fact that I was busting to go to the loo from halfway through but there was no way I was leaving the cinema. In France however the cinema experience was much more enjoyable as everyone was very vocal whenever something really awesome happened. Legolas running up the side of an oliphaunt? "YEAH GO LEGOLAS!! WHOOOOO!!" *CHEERING AND VIGOROUS APPLAUSE*. Sauron destroyed "YEAHHHHH!!! WHOOOHHOOOOOOO!! CLAP CLAP CLAP!!" Here I couldn't even sniff without my sister hissing at me to be quiet. I still couldn't help my squeal of delight when Sam picked up Frodo and carried him up the mountain though. In my opinion the true hero of the Lord of the Rings is trusty, loyal and steadfast Sam. Without him Frodo never would have got anywhere near Mt Doom or Mordor and the world would have been overrun and everyone would have died.

And on the fourteenth day of the eleventh month in the year 2003 the new Harry Potter trailer was unleashed on the world and people saw it and they were glad as it was good!! Though I unfortunately missed it when it was on the news I quickly made my way to the wonderful trailers world where I was able to download it in all it's replayable glory. Hopefully I will have good magic dreams tonight rather than the stupid McDonalds dream I had last night in which I spent half an hour trying to order a chicken wrap and one of those fruity sundae things but kept being presented with cheeseburgers and fries and something that looked like a chicken wrap only it was full of olives and grapes. Then when I tried to complain to the manager a rude man told me there wasn't a manager! Then I woke up feeling vaguely annoyed that I didn't get to eat what I spent ages trying to get!
